| spa |

dc.title.translated | Identification of the spatial structure of rectangular area : a gateway to the development of algebraic thinking. | eng |
dc.description.abstractenglish | The purpose of this degree project, developed in the context of a master's degree in mathematics teaching, was to identify the scope of a curricular innovation—designed with the intention of supporting the recognition of spatial structure of rectangular area—in the development of algebraic thinking of a group of fifth grade elementary students. This purpose, and my emphasis on supporting conceptual construction processes in the classroom to foster relational learning, involved me as a teacher and an active subject in a continuous process of learning about the mathematical ideas of students and the development of their thinking so as to, to be able to make pertinent decisions related to my teaching acts; in other words, I was involved in the development of cycles of systematic inquiry in the classroom and reflection. The study involved in the development of the project—which revolved around the design, implementation and observation of a sequence of activities that supported the recognition of the spatial structure of rectangular area in groups of 5th grade students—was carried out in two phases: the work of the second phase (which took place in 2018) as an improved iteration of the work of the first phase (developed in 2017), given the learning achieved in the development of the first phase. The results provide significant evidence that involving children in the development of activities focused on the identification of the spatial structure of rectangular area, in addition to supporting multiplicative reasoning, promotes the development of algebraic thinking since it attends to variation and the change. | eng |
