Abstract
This research evaluates the way in which an EEG electroencephalographic signal processing system based on Intrinsic Mode Functions (IMF) analysis, obtained through adaptive-projection intrinsically transformed-multivariate empirical mode decomposition (APIT-MEMD), estimates the relationship between the imaginary speech of open and closed vowels /a/, /e/, /i/, /o/, /u/, the cognitive style for the DIC dimension (Dependence “DC”, Intermediate “IntC” and Field Independent “IC ”) and the spatial effect on the EEG signal in a configuration of 14 electrodes, distributed over the left hemisphere (LH), in such a way as to explain the variability of the voluntary non-motor EEG signal from the weighted PSD power spectrum, extracted from the frequency domain using the Hilbert-Huang transform (HHT).
This system is characterized by the control of variables that affect the subject's attention during the acquisition of EEG signals, such as ambient noise, light, adaptation of the electrodes on the left hemisphere, a portable EEG signal acquisition system modified EMOTIV and a cognitive task synchronization system that uses a led-type luminous marker, which indicates the beginning and end of any repetition of the imaginary speech of each vowel. The IMFs obtained are statistically compared by mixed analysis of repeated measures, to estimate the significant differences in a multivariate way.
As a result, a database was developed with non-motor voluntary EEG signals from the left hemisphere (LH) in a sample of 70 Spanish-speaking individuals and their weighted PSD of the vowel imaginary in 10 IMFs organized in 7 experimental combinations of which the results are reported. IMF, 1, 4, 5, 6 and 7, finding significant differences between the vowels /a/ and /u/, as well as significant differences between IMF 8 and between the vowels /a/-/o/ and /a/- /u/ and Intermediate (IntC) and Field Independent (IC) cognitive styles according to multiple comparisons with Bonferroni. These results have psychometric implications in the recognition of the DIC cognitive style in a quantitative and automated way.
